There Could be Little Time Left to Visit Austin Shrine to Weirdness
We might have only days left to enjoy one of the little known sites that truly make Austin weird.
The Cathedral of Junk is an amazing improvised collection of hubcaps, bottles, cast off industrial equipment, neon signs and just about anything else you can imagine. It’s built into walkways and rooms. Several weddings have been performed there, and there even were plans to stage a play there next month.
But the City of Austin says it violates city code, and has given Cathedral creator Vince Hanneman until March 31 to bring it up to code, or it will be flattened and hauled away.
You can visit it free of charge– and your time to do that could be limited. Check the excellent blog 365 Things to Do in Austin for information on how to do that.
And on The Austinist website, there’s information on volunteer efforts to save the structure.
I don’t want to take sides on this. I can understand how the neighbors might not like living next to a cathedral, of junk or otherwise. And it certainly needs to be safe. But at the same time I’d hate to see Austin become slightly less weird.
